Understanding Treaties in Ontario

November 20, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

November 20 @ 1:00 pm 3:00 pm

Join us for Understanding Treaties in Ontario to learn about the importance of treaties in Ontario and how treaties affect the work land trusts do.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of Ontario treaties and how they have shaped the relationship between Indigenous peoples and settlers in the region. We’ll also explore how these treaties impact, and should impact, the work you do.

These treaties are foundational to understanding land rights, resource use, and the responsibilities of both parties. They are important because they recognize the sovereignty of Indigenous nations, outline the terms of land sharing, and continue to influence legal and political frameworks in Ontario today.

Understanding and honouring treaties is crucial to advancing reconciliation, respecting Indigenous rights, and fostering just and equitable relations in the province. An in-depth look at a modern-day Williams Treaties will be highlighted.

This session will be facilitated by Michael Jacobs, Chief Executive Officer, Cambium Indigenous Professional Services.
